Our Story

Our Story
Raw Matcha was born from a deep love for matcha — long before it became trendy. Our founder, Soph, discovered matcha over 12 years ago and instantly fell in love with its calming energy, health benefits, and grounding ritual. While studying Nutritional Medicine at university, she couldn’t stop dreaming of one day starting her own matcha brand. Instead of focusing on lectures, she spent hours sketching logos, researching tea farms in Japan, and visualising a product-based business that aligned with her values.
In 2021, soph and her now fiancé Mat — then just one year into their relationship — went halves on their first bulk matcha order. That moment marked the start of Raw Matcha, and the beginning of their shared journey as co-founders.
The early days were all about education. Mat and Soph spent weekends at local markets, making matcha lattes on the spot and explaining (again and again) what matcha was and why people should be drinking it. At the time, it was still a mystery to most — even at Soph’s job at The Kiosk on Newcastle Beach, where she would bring her own matcha to work and sip on “that weird green stuff.” Despite the laughs, she believed matcha would take off — and convinced her boss to put it on the menu. He took the risk, and The Kiosk became Raw Matcha’s very first café stockist — a place that still holds a very special place in their hearts. Since then, the word has spread. Today, Raw Matcha is stocked in over 40 cafés across NSW and supported by a loyal community of online customers who value quality, wellness, and transparency. Raw Matcha sources only the highest-grade, first harvest matcha, straight from a small family run tea field in Japan — no fillers, no added flavours, just pure ceremonial-grade green tea leaves. Soph and Mat’s mission is to share the beauty of matcha with as many people as possible — one cup at a time.
