Make the perfect Matcha, with Soph
I invite you to treat your daily cup of matcha as a ritual of self love and mindfulness. From sifting, to whisking, to sipping - let it be your morning meditative practice.
Matcha is a fine green tea powder packed with an abundance of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is loved across the world for its smooth taste, gentle release of energy and countless health benefits.
Derived from Uji, Kyoto in Japan and served for decades, matcha was originally used to sharpen the focus and clarity during meditation. It became an integral part of Japanese tea ceremonies, a symbol of harmony, respect and tranquility.
The ritual's emphasis on mindfulness and the art of preparation, elevated matcha beyond a beverage to a meditative practice. This history continues to inspire moments of self-care and inner balance today.
Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your ritual, here's a step-by-step guide to making a delicious, frothy bowl of ceremonial matcha.
What You’ll Need:
High-quality matcha powder (first harvest, ceremonial, grade A, premium matcha - aka Raw Nutrition's matcha)
A matcha bowl (chawan) or any wide, shallow bowl
A bamboo whisk (chasen) or a steam wand/milk frother
A sifter (optional, but recommended)
Hot water (not boiling — around 70–80°C)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Sift the Matcha
Sift 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 grams) of matcha powder into your bowl using a small sifter. This helps prevent clumps and creates a smoother, frothier drink.
2. Add Water
Pour about 60–90 ml of hot water into the bowl. Remember, the water should be hot but not boiling, as boiling water can burn the powder and give it a bitter taste. If you are using sweetener such as honey, maple syrup or agave, add this to the bowl after the hot water.
3. Whisk It
Using your bamboo whisk, whisk the matcha briskly in a zig-zag "M" or "W" motion. The goal is to create a light, foamy layer of bubbles/crema on top. This usually takes about 30 seconds.
If you are using a steam wand or milk frother, just add all ingredients (milk, matcha powder, and sweetener) into the jug and steam/blend all together. No hot water is needed.
4. Sip and Enjoy
Pour your whisked matcha over hot steamed milk (my favourite is warm coconut milk) or add to cold milk for an iced matcha latte, and that's it! Matcha is best enjoyed fresh, so make sure to drink it soon after making. I also love to serve mine with cinnamon on top.
Tips for Better Matcha:
Store it well: Keep matcha in an airtight container in a cool, dark place (or in the fridge) to maintain freshness. Never ever store your matcha in a container that allows the powder to be exposed to sunlight.
Use good quality water: The quality of your water impacts the flavour. Filtered water works best.
Practice makes perfect: Your whisking technique will improve over time. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect at first.
Final Thoughts
Making matcha isn’t just about the drink — it’s a ritual. It encourages you to slow down, be present, and enjoy the process. Whether you're starting your day or taking a midday break, a bowl of matcha is a mindful, nourishing choice.
So grab your whisk, scoop that vibrant green powder, and enjoy the calm energy that matcha brings.
